Store-Bought Moisturizers Are Full of Junk. Here’s What to Do Instead.
If you have chronically dry skin, you have probably spent more money than you care to admit on body lotions that disappoint. You flip the bottle over, squint at the ingredient list, and find a wall of preservatives, parabens, and synthetic fillers that have no business being on your skin. Then you pay too much for the privilege.
Here is the thing: the best body moisturizer you will ever use is one you make yourself in about 20 minutes, with ingredients you can actually pronounce. No mystery chemicals. No watered-down formulas. Just pure, skin-nourishing butters and oils that melt directly into your skin and do exactly what they are supposed to do.
This whipped citrus mint body butter is the recipe we keep coming back to. It smells like a spa, absorbs without leaving a greasy film, and costs a fraction of what you would pay for a comparable clean beauty product at Sephora. It also makes an incredible homemade gift — jar it up with a ribbon and you have something genuinely special.
We source all our ingredients from iHerb, specifically the Aura Cacia line. The quality is exceptional and the prices are far better than you will find in specialty stores. All ingredients ship fast and arrive fresh.

What You Need to Make Whipped Body Butter
This recipe uses four base ingredients — two butters and two oils — plus essential oils for scent. Every single one pulls its weight. Here is what each ingredient does for your skin and why it belongs in this formula.
Shea Butter

Shea butter is the backbone of this recipe and one of the most effective natural moisturizers on the planet. Pressed from the nut of the African Shea Tree, it is naturally rich in Vitamins A, E, and F. Vitamin A helps address skin conditions like eczema, acne, and fine lines. Vitamin E keeps skin clear and protected from sun damage. Vitamin F — an omega-6 fatty acid — acts as a skin protector, rejuvenating and softening rough, dry, or chapped areas.
Shea butter is also well-documented for its anti-inflammatory properties, which means it can calm redness and irritation while it moisturizes. Its high levels of oleic, linoleic, and stearic acids have been shown to protect skin against daily environmental damage. It absorbs quickly without clogging pores, promotes healthy cell turnover, and improves elasticity over time. Hard at room temperature, it melts instantly on contact with skin.

Cocoa Butter
Rich, dense, and faintly chocolate-scented, cocoa butter is extracted from the cacao bean and is one of the most intensely moisturizing natural fats available. It is hard at room temperature but melts immediately into skin, creating a protective barrier that locks in hydration while it works.
Cocoa butter is loaded with Vitamins E and K, omega fatty acids, and antioxidants called polyphenols that have been shown to improve skin tone and elasticity by stimulating collagen production. It visibly reduces the appearance of scars and dark spots over time. Like shea butter, it is also anti-inflammatory — helpful for itchy, irritated, or reactive skin. And yes, that faint chocolate scent is real, and it pairs beautifully with the citrus and mint oils in this recipe.

Sweet Almond Oil

Pressed from almonds, sweet almond oil is light, fast-absorbing, and deeply hydrating without any greasy residue. It is one of the best carrier oils for dry and sensitive skin because it delivers moisture without overwhelming the skin’s natural oil balance.
Sweet almond oil is rich in Vitamin A, which helps fend off acne and supports healthy cell turnover, and has been studied for its ability to protect skin against UV damage both before and after sun exposure. It is safe for sensitive skin and is well known for reducing the inflammation associated with conditions like psoriasis and eczema. Bonus: it works as a natural makeup remover while you are at it.

Apricot Kernel Oil
Pressed from the pit of an apricot, this lightweight oil is high in Vitamins E and K and packed with antioxidants that protect skin against free radical damage. The result is tighter, more toned-looking skin, with a visible reduction in age spots over time. Those same antioxidants may also offer protection against UV-related skin damage.
Apricot kernel oil has anti-inflammatory properties that help calm acne breakouts without clogging pores — making it one of the most versatile carrier oils in natural skincare. It absorbs cleanly and layers beautifully with the other oils in this recipe.

Peppermint and Citrus Essential Oils

Peppermint is the non-negotiable in this recipe — it gives the body butter its signature cool, refreshing kick and pairs perfectly with any citrus blend. For the citrus layer, choose two to four oils from the options below based on what appeals to you. We use lime, tangerine, and sweet orange, which together create a bright, clean scent that is energizing without being sharp.
A note on citrus oils: some citrus essential oils (particularly cold-pressed lemon and bergamot) can cause photosensitivity. If you plan to use this body butter before sun exposure, stick to steam-distilled citrus oils or use your body butter as an evening treatment to be safe.

Pro Tips Before You Start
- Add arrowroot powder for a non-greasy finish. If your skin tends to feel oily after applying body butter, stir in 1 to 2 teaspoons of arrowroot powder after the oils cool but before whipping. It absorbs excess oil and leaves a silky, dry finish that most people prefer.
- Do not skip the chill step. The mixture needs to be cold enough to whip into peaks. Too warm and it stays liquid. Aim for the consistency of softened butter — firm at the edges, slightly soft in the center.
- Graininess is fixable. If your body butter develops a grainy or gritty texture, it cooled too slowly. Gently re-melt it, then chill it faster (freezer for 15 to 20 minutes instead of fridge) and whip immediately when it starts to set.
- Summer storage. Natural butters melt around 76 to 90 degrees F. In warm months, store your body butter in the fridge to keep the whipped texture intact. It will re-melt on your skin exactly the same way.
- Perfect as a gift. Pour into small glass jars with lids before the butter fully sets. Add a simple label and ribbon. This recipe makes enough to fill two to three 4-oz jars.

Mint Citrus Whipped Body Butter
This body butter is nourishing to the skin, absorbs quickly and is not greasy at all. Your skin will be soft and hydrated in no time, while the peppermint and citrus essential oils will uplift your spirit.
- 4 ounces Aura Cacia Shea Butter
- 3.75 ounces Aura Cacia Nourishing Cocoa Butter
- 1/2 cup Aura Cacia Apricot Kernel Oil
- 1/2 cup Aura Cacia Sweet Almond Oil
- 15 drops Peppermint Essential Oil
- 15 drops Lime Essential Oil (optional)
- 15 drops Tangerine Essential Oil (optional)
- 10 drops Sweet Orange Essential Oil (optional)
- 10 drops Lemon Essential Oil (optional)
-
Empty the contents of both containers of the shea butter and cocoa butter in a small clean saucepan on medium low heat until just melted. These are hard butters and you may need a sharp knife to remove them. Be careful! Remove from heat immediately and pour the mixture into the bowl of your stand mixer.Tip #1 : Instead of placing the oils directly in a saucepan, create a double boiler by placing 1 cup of water in a saucepan big enough to allow the bowl of your stand mixer to rest on top of the pot. As the water boils, the steam will gently warm the bottom of the bowl, melting the oils. Remove from heat and continue with the next steps. This will save you from having to wash your pot.
-
Stir in the sweet almond oil and apricot kernel oil. Place in the refrigerator to cool so the oils can just begin to solidify again. To speed things up place the bowl in the freezer. It will take about 1 hour in the fridge or 30 minutes in the freezer.
Tip #2: If you like a harder or lighter body butter, simply adjust the amount of sweet almond and apricot kernel oils used. More with result in a firmer body butter and more will result in a lighter end product. -
When the oils are almost solid, but not super hard (no liquid oil left) blend the mixture with the whisk attachment on your stand mixer. Now’s the time to add the essential oils. You can add more essential oils later if you would like to adjust the scent. Whip until the mixture looks creamy like whipped cream (5-7 minutes). If it looks grainy you haven’t whipped it long enough. Tip #3: You really can’t over whip this. The longer the better, and the more luxurious and creamy it will become.
-
Once the mixture is light, creamy, and whipped place in a glass jar of your choosing. Two 8 ounce jars should do the trick. You can also reuse the jars the Aura Cacia Shea and Cocoa Butters came in, but there will be more cream left over.
-
5. Enjoy your silky smooth Citrus Mint Body Butter!

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does homemade body butter last?
Stored in a cool, dry place in an airtight jar, this body butter will stay fresh for four to six months. In summer or warm climates, keep it in the fridge to extend the shelf life and maintain the whipped texture. Always use clean, dry hands or a small spatula to scoop it out — introducing water into the jar will shorten its life significantly.
Why did my body butter turn grainy?
Graininess happens when the butters cool too slowly, causing the fat molecules to crystallize unevenly. The fix is fast-cooling: next time, chill the mixture in the freezer for 15 to 20 minutes rather than the refrigerator. If your current batch is grainy, simply re-melt it over a double boiler, then chill it quickly and re-whip.
My body butter melted. Is it ruined?
Not at all. If it melts from heat, just pop it in the fridge until it firms back up, then re-whip with a hand mixer. The ingredients are completely stable through repeated melt-and-chill cycles — the texture just needs to be rebuilt.
Can I use this body butter on my face?
The base ingredients are all skin-safe, but this formula is rich and occlusive, which can be too heavy for facial skin — especially if you are acne-prone. We recommend using it on the body (arms, legs, elbows, feet) and reaching for something lighter on the face, like our DIY Manuka Honey Face Masks, which are formulated for facial skin by skin type.
Can I swap the essential oils for a different scent?
Absolutely. The citrus mint combination is our favorite, but this base works beautifully with lavender and vanilla, eucalyptus and rosemary, or even an unscented version if you prefer to let the cocoa butter’s natural chocolate note shine through. Use 20 to 30 drops total of whatever combination you love.
Is this recipe safe during pregnancy?
The base butters and oils are generally considered safe. However, some essential oils — including peppermint in high amounts — are often flagged as oils to use cautiously during pregnancy. Consult your healthcare provider before using essential oils topically while pregnant.
Where do I buy all these ingredients?
We order everything from iHerb. They carry the full Aura Cacia line, ship fast, and their prices are significantly better than what you will find at specialty health stores. New customers get 10% off their first order, and returning customers get 5% off with our code.
